After graduating from Mill Hill School, London, in 1976, Patrick attended the Cumbria College of Agriculture and Forestry, in Penrith, England, graduating with a National Diploma in Forestry in June 1981. Patrick has worked in most aspects of the forestry profession in Great Britain, including working for Treetop Contracts, Ltd., Sible Hedingham, Essex, England; The Duke Of Buccleuch’s Bowhill Estates, Selkirk, Scotland; The Forestry Commission, Brechfa, Dyfed, Wales and later for J. Roberson & Sons, Timber Merchants, Llanybydder, Dyfed, Wales.

Patrick Heffernan

After emigrating to the United States in 1983, Patrick has worked within Montana's forest industry for a variety of employers including Canyon Logging Co., Columbia Falls; Plum Creek Timber Company, Kalispell; Creative Consultant Group (which he founded in 1992) and eight years with the Montana Logging Association (MLA), directing their award-winning Accredited Logging Professional program and managing their natural resources liaison and legislative affairs. Most recently, he spent two years with the Liz Claiborne Art Ortenberg Foundation, starting up and directing their Red Lodge Clearinghouse project.

He founded PAFTI, Inc. in 2004, to pursue his desire to work for a variety of clients and to create new approaches for tackling natural resource management challenges.

Patrick lives near Hungry Horse, Montana with his wife, Carol. Patrick has a keen interest in pursuing large trout in North America and New Zealand and is a part owner and manager of a tree farming enterprise in New Zealand.

Rex Svoboda, Equipment Repair Industries, LLC., Principal Forest Machinery Consultant

Rex Svoboda graduated from Great Falls High School, Montana and went on to complete a BA in Interpersonal Communication at the University of Montana, Missoula. Rex spent time overseas in the U.S. Army Signal Corps, where he completed extensive training in electrical theory, radio electronics and radio systems design and operation. He completed secondary education coursework at the University of Montana and study in the field of hydraulic, mechanical and electrical systems for Caterpillar, Detroit Diesel, Timbco, Timberjack, Case, International Harvester and other brands of construction and forestry equipment.

Rex Svoboda

Rex taught automotive classes at High School and adult vocational levels and then went on to spend ten years as successful small grains and hay farmer. Rex then began working with forestry equipment and founded and operated Equipment Repair, Inc. for 12 years, until he and his partner sold the business in 2001. At ERI they designed and manufactured forestry attachments and provided complete sales and service support for many major brands of forestry and construction equipment. Rex was also involved in product field development for Timbco, even spending some time in South Africa in training and product support. Rex has worked extensively in Alaska and the western U.S.

Rex lives in Missoula, Montana, with his wife, Susan and enjoys motorcycle touring and road racing and skiing in the winter. Rex is also a bit of a gearhead, having designed and built his own sports car, with which he broke the 200 m.p.h. a barrier at the Bonneville salt flats. Rex is also a crew member and mechanic for the Burkland 411 Streamliner - the world's fastest piston-engined vehicle.
